Dice are ancient
Cubic dice with opposite faces summing to seven became common in Europe over many centuries; earlier cultures used marked sticks, knucklebones and other randomisers. Archaeological finds of dice appear across the ancient Mediterranean and South Asia.
Playing cards travelled west
Playing cards reached Europe from Asia in the later Middle Ages. Regional decks differed — French-suited cards with hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades later became widely standardised for many English-language games.
Roulette’s single zero
European-style roulette uses pockets 0–36 (37 pockets). The single zero is a defining layout difference from American double-zero wheels. House edge maths follows from that pocket count when bets pay at traditional odds.
Slot machines started mechanical
Early slot machines in the late nineteenth century used mechanical reels and coin operation. Modern casino slots are electronic and driven by random number generators; social casino slots on the web are separate entertainment products that only mimic the presentation.
Sic Bo’s three dice
Sic Bo (also known in some places as tai sai or dai siu) is a dice game long associated with Chinese gaming tables. Bets on totals, big/small and combinations map to the 216 possible outcomes of three six-sided dice.
